Matariki is the beginning of the Maori New Year and seen by a constellation in the sky.
It is said that if you can see the 7 stars clearly it will be a fine year. If they are hard to see and close together it will be a cold year ahead.
To celebrate Room 14 and 15 listened to Matariki by Melanie Drewery. We then went into the hall and sat at different tables. Now we were going to be baking kumara in the oven using our piece of procedure writing that we were all given.
Here we all are working on our literacy and maths to do with Matariki in our new classroom.
First we had to wash our hands.
Then we picked a kumara from this pile.
We then had to wash our kumara under the water to make sure there was no dirt or germs on it.
After that we had to stab our kumara 4 times on each side with the fork. This was tricky as the kumara was really hard! Look at Jenayas's face!
Then we got a piece of tinfoil and had to wrap it around the kumara tightly so there was no parts of the kumara showing.
Once that was done we wrote our names on our kumara so we knew who's was who's and gave them to Mr Dawes.
Mr Dawes put them in the oven for us to cook. We then waited half an hour to check on them.
The oven got pretty full with 60 kumaras!
After 30 minutes Mr Dawes pulled the Kumara's out and we had to squeeze them to see if they were ready. If they were soft and squishy it meant they were good for us to eat.
Here is Trinity telling us about her kumara after half an hour in the oven.
All of the kumaras needed an extra 15 minutes to cook. Once they were done they were put on plates to cool down so we could eat them all.
After computers we came back to a very nice smelling classroom and kumara's that had called down. 3 plates full!
Here is what our kumara looked like after it had been cooked. Nice and fluffy.
All of us enjoying our Kumara at second lunch!
