Last week we were given the opportunity to weave some paper by following the piece of procedure writing that we were given. We had heaps of fun and it integrated with us celebrating Matariki. We decided to do paper weaving as the Maori people took flax woven mats to sit on around the bon fire and eat their kumara with to celebrate Matariki.
Check out our pictures of our process and what we have made.
First we picked 3 colours that we would be using. 1 of them was our base colour which we had to cut 7/8 of the way across.
This is what they looked like when it was done.
Then we cut strips going landscape on our other 2 pieces of paper.
Then we placed our first colour in our base. Under over under over until it was all done. The extra bits hung out over the end.
Then we added in our other colour and did over under over under.
It took a long time and it was a little bit tricky as well!
We kept going until our mat was full!
Some of us were pretty happy with what we had achieved so far.
Eventually we got there and were able to see the pattern we had made.
We were all very happy with what we had completed.
Paihia was a whizz at doing it and even helped some people out.
Once this was complete. We cut off the edges and glue on our pieces so it became a tidy mat.
We then glued them onto a black piece of paper.
And then we decorated them with the 7 stars of Matariki, the moon and the bon fire to cook the kumara.
We think we have mastered the art of procedure writing and enjoyed making these.
Let us know what you think.
